Great advice, Jon. And, I would add to it that open door shouldn’t only be for people to come in. It should be for the leader to go out……make a habit of getting out of your office, have meetings in other people’s offices, leave early enough that you can stop and have conversations with people along the way. Make a point of engaging in casual and informal conversation with people and build rapport, so they become comfortable talking with you, and you’ll be amazed how well informed you will become.
